Be Part of the Culture of Generosity in New Zealand As a reflection of the government’s initiatives to facilitate larger scale of giving to charities and other non-profit organisations and encourage a culture of generosity nationwide, the newly enacted Income Tax Act 2007 details all related legislation changes aiming to considerably enhance tax incentives for individuals, businesses and Maori authorities who make money donations for charitable purposes. For individual donors--- better rewarded for your generosity Under the new Income Tax legislation, individual donors’ philanthropy will be better recognized and rewarded with the elimination of the capped $630.00 per annum tax credit. From now on, an individual donor who makes a “charitable or other public benefit gift" is entitled to claim a tax credit amounting to one-third of the total donations he or she made in the relevant tax year. For business donors---reduced income tax bill and enhanced community goodwill With the newly enacted Income Tax Act 2007coming into effect, the 5 percent deduction limit on donations made by companies and Maori authorities are gone as a history. All the charitable or other public benefit gifts a company makes in a financial year to a society, institution, association, organisation, trust or fund of any kind as described in section LD 3(2) or set out in Schedule 32 are now legitimate deductions from its yearly taxable income. For regular donors---easy procedures and instant tax benefit in the form of reduced PAYE If your employers are qualified for the Payroll Giving Scheme and offers it to its employees, you can then become a regular donor to make donations to approved donee organizations straight from your pay and at the meantime to reap the benefit of immediately reduced PAYE payable along the way. This means you don’t have to wait till the end of year to go through the hassle of claiming through Tax credit claim form (IR526). The Laura Fergusson Trust Canterbury is a donee organisation that has Inland Revenue-approved donee status. Please refer to http://www.ird.govt.nz/donee-organisations/donee-l.html for a complete list of IRD approved donee organisations. In response to these considerably enhanced tax incentives per the newly enacted Income Tax Act 2007 in an effort to encourage a culture of generosity in New Zealand, we expect more individuals and businesses will revisit their donation plans. If you are (or will be) considering make a donation to The Laura Fergusson Trust Canterbury, please feel free to contact us as below:
The Laura Fergusson Trust Canterbury Inc. 279 Ilam Road Burnside Christchurch 8053 Telephone: (03) 351 6047 Fax: (03) 351 1804
